Frozen veggies are cheaper but fresh tastes better - which side wins for budget meals?

I started buying frozen broccoli last month to save cash, but the texture is just mushy no matter how I cook it. Fresh costs twice as much though. Has anyone found a frozen veggie that actually keeps its crunch?

Peas are the one frozen veg that actually works, but even then, emma96, you gotta check the bag for "petite" or "baby" peas. The regular frozen peas are starchier and turn mealy. I've had decent luck with frozen corn too, it holds its pop better than most. Broccoli is a lost cause unless you roast it from frozen at 450F and don't touch it for 20 minutes. Still not as good as fresh but it's edible.

Oh I totally get the mushy broccoli struggle. I bought a bag of frozen green beans thinking they'd be crisp and they turned into sad little limp strings. For me, frozen peas are the one exception, they actually hold up pretty well and taste fine. I've given up on frozen broccoli entirely, my cooking skills just aren't good enough to rescue it. So I guess my advice is cheap frozen peas for the win, but leave the fresh broccoli for special occasions.
