My rice cooker died mid-dinner prep last night

I was about to dump in 2 cups of rice for a cheap stir fry when the button just clicked and nothing happened. Tried a different outlet and still dead, so I had to boil the rice on the stove instead and it came out mushy. Now I gotta figure out if I can fix the cooker myself or just grab a $20 one from Walmart. Has anyone else had a rice cooker just give up like that with no warning?

That's rough, man. Ngl, rice cookers dying with zero warning is super common though. The heating element or the internal switch just burns out on those cheap ones after a year or two. You can try opening it up to see if a wire came loose, but honestly for a $20 Walmart special it's barely worth the effort. Stovetop rice is fine once you get the water ratio down, but it's a pain when you're already counting on the cooker. Just grab a new one and don't bother fixing it.

Yeah, Charles pretty much nailed it with the heating element thing. But here's a weird angle people skip - sometimes it's not the cooker at all, it's your outlet's GFCI tripping. I had a toaster kill my rice cooker once because the breaker was old and sensitive. Before you toss it, check your circuit breaker panel and see if anything flipped. Could save you a trip to Walmart if you're lucky.

Yo, that GFCI tip is smart, I've seen that happen too.
