Am I the only one who thinks hostels in Barcelona are overhyped?
I stayed at a popular one near Las Ramblas last month for 45 euros a night and the shared bathroom was filthy by noon. Why does everyone rave about them when a budget hotel 10 minutes away was only 10 euros more?

Wait, didn't you feel totally let down by the whole "authentic Barcelona experience" thing too? The bathrooms in those places are rough, and that price difference for a clean room is nothing. I'd take a quiet budget hotel over hostel chaos any day.

Did you give it more than one night, @emery10? I actually loved the hostel vibe there, met some awesome people from all over the place. Sure the bathroom situation wasn't perfect, but that's part of the fun to me.

People forget that the whole point of traveling used to be getting out of your comfort zone, not just finding the best deal on a private room with perfect wifi. Same thing happens with restaurants now, everyone wants the hidden gem but then complains when the service is slow or the menu is limited. You can't have authentic experiences if you're trying to control every little detail.
