Coffee shop stranger changed my whole view on hostel dorms

I was grabbing a $3 espresso in Buenos Aires last month and this guy from Sweden starts chatting me up. He said he pays $0 for accommodation by doing house sits and farm stays through a website I'd never heard of. It hit different because I've been dropping $30-$40 a night on hostels thinking I was being smart. Has anyone else tried this or found decent free stay options that don't feel sketchy?

The real hidden cost nobody talks about is the mental energy you burn arranging all that stuff. Like yeah free stays sound amazing until you're messaging 20 people hoping one works out and coordinating arrival times with strangers who might flake. Hostels are predictable at least. You walk in, they have a bed, done. House sits and farms require way more planning and social battery than people admit. For some travelers that stress is worth the savings but for others it eats into the whole point of being on the road. Just something to weigh before diving in.

Why do I have to plan more for a free bed than I do for my actual job?

Yeah definitely try TrustedHousesitters or Workaway. Used both for months and saved a ton of cash. Just be upfront about what you're willing to do and read reviews before agreeing to anything.
