Just hit 50,000 miles on my 2008 Honda and I finally did the math on my road trips

Tbh I never tracked my travel spending until last month. I added up every gas receipt, motel bill, and fast food stop from my last 12 road trips since 2016. Came to about 50,000 miles total. The wild part is that my average daily cost dropped from $85 back in 2016 to $52 now. Mostly because I stopped staying at chain motels and switched to hostels or camping near cities like Flagstaff and Asheville. Also learned that cooking one meal a day in a parking lot with a $15 butane stove saves me about $8 a day. Anyone else ever add up their long term travel costs and get surprised by a number like that?

Damn, that's a real eye opener. Good on you for actually crunching those numbers, most people never do. The drop from 85 to 52 bucks a day is huge, that's like saving a whole trip's budget over time. I did something similar last year with my own car and it hurt to see where the money went. But it's cool you figured out the stove thing, little changes add up faster than you think. Makes me want to dig up my old receipts too, even if it stings a bit.
