I used to think booking hotels an hour before check-in on apps like HotelTonight saved me a bundle, but a front desk clerk in Nashville told me I was paying 30 percent more than their loyalty members. She showed me the rate sheet and I was shocked I had been overpaying for years. Anyone else find that joining a hotel rewards program beats the last minute deals?

Why do people never learn that loyalty programs actually pay off? I found that out the hard way with airlines too. Last minute bookings are a sucker's game.
