Used to fly Spirit for $39 until I got hit with a $65 bag fee at the gate in Vegas

Now I just take Amtrak from Oakland to Burbank for $45 flat. Has anyone else swapped planes for trains on west coast routes?

Totally been there myself. That surprise bag fee is brutal, especially when you're already trying to save. Took the Coast Starlight from Seattle to LA last year for about $60 and it was honestly way more chill than dealing with airport security and all that. Just bring your own snacks and a book, and you're set for the ride.

Heard a podcast last week that said Amtrak actually lost money on the Coast Starlight route for years because of all the delays. But man, @theas28 is right about the vibe being way better than flying. Those baggage fees are such a scam, especially when you're already paying for the ticket. I did the same route a couple years back and the observation car was packed with people just staring at the ocean for hours. Way more relaxing than squishing into a middle seat at 30,000 feet.
