Pro tip: my $40 spreadsheet killed my $200 'budgeting app' subscription

I paid for one of those fancy apps for 14 months, $14.99 a month, and it kept telling me I was overspending on coffee but never showed me WHERE the real leaks were. Last month I got sick of it and built a plain Google Sheet with categories for every single purchase I made in 30 days. Turns out my biggest leak was auto renewals I forgot about: 3 subscriptions totaling $47 a month. The app never flagged them because it only looked at my bank feed, not my actual spending menu. I canceled all 3 and now I track everything manually on Sunday mornings with my coffee. It takes 15 minutes and I finally see the pattern. Has anyone else found that the simple tools beat the "smart" ones because they force you to actually look at the numbers?

Paying the app to hide the details was the real waste.

Adding that on top of what the app already costs makes it feel like a double charge for basic features. Most people just want to see the price upfront without paying extra for the privilege. If they dropped the fee, they'd probably keep more users around anyway.
