PSA: My comic book collecting budget fight - rare issues or full runs?
I love collecting comics but my budget makes me choose between two paths! One side says to save up for a single rare, expensive issue that could gain value over time. The other side argues buying cheaper, complete story arcs gives more joy right now without breaking the bank. For example, I skipped a pricey first appearance last month and instead got a whole year's worth of a series I really enjoy. Now I'm happy with my shelves full of stories, but I wonder if I missed a good investment. How do you balance spending for fun versus potential future wins in your hobbies? Let's debate this!

Rare books tend to hold their value way better than common runs though, don't they? It's not always a total gamble if you pick the right key issue.

You said rare books hold their value better, but that's only true if they stay rare. A book can be a key issue today, but a new find or reprint can crash its price tomorrow. So it's still pretty unpredictable, even with careful picks.

But isn't the investment part a total gamble anyway? Prices could drop just as easy as they rise, leaving you with one expensive book instead of stories you actually read. Why stress over maybe making money later when you already enjoy what you bought?

Remember the 'Death of Superman' comic from the 90s? It was selling for hundreds at first. Now it's worth barely anything because of overprinting. If you bought it to make money, you'd be pretty disappointed. But the story is still enjoyable if you like Superman. The market is just too unpredictable to rely on for investment. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather read the books than stress over their value.
