Started a separate account just for groceries and it stopped me from fooling myself
I used to pull from one big pile of money and just kind of guess how much I was spending on food each month. The problem was I would tell myself "eh, probably like $500" when it was closer to $800, and I had no real proof either way. So about 4 months ago I opened a second checking account, nothing fancy, and now I move exactly $650 in there on the 1st. That's it. My debit card for that account only gets used at the grocery store and the produce stand by my place. When the $650 runs out around the 26th, we eat whatever is in the pantry until the next month. First month was rough, I'll be honest, I ate a lot of rice and eggs the last week. But by month three I started planning meals around what was actually on sale instead of just buying what sounded good. Last month I finished with $40 still sitting in there, which has never happened before. Curious if anyone else runs a separate account like this, or do you just track it in an app?
