Watch out for those 'planner subscription' auto-renewals, got hit with $89 today

Last week I got a notification from my bank about an $89 charge from a digital planner app I forgot I even had. 3 years ago I signed up for their yearly plan during a New Year's push, thought I canceled it after the first year, but the fine print had it set to auto-renew at full price. I called them and they refunded it, but only after a 20 minute hold and me pointing out their own confirmation email from year one. Check your app subscriptions in your phone settings or payment history, especially the ones you haven't opened in months. Has anyone else had a sneaky renewal like this slip through, and did you get your money back?

Why is it always the stuff you barely use that ends up costing the most? Same thing happened to me with a photo editing app I downloaded once to fix a birthday pic, then forgot about for two years. I got hit with a $60 charge and had to dig through old emails to prove I'd only agreed to the free trial. It feels like these companies bank on you forgetting, and honestly it works because most people probably don't even notice. I got my refund too, but only after making them pull up my full payment history, which was a whole other chore.
