Question about pulling cable through old conduit that's packed with dirt

Had a job last month in a 1920s house in Philly where the old underground conduit to the garage was totally blocked. I tried the usual water jet trick but it just made mud. Out of ideas, I grabbed a shop vac and taped a thin plastic tube to the hose, then fed it from the garage end while my buddy kept suction at the house. After about 20 minutes of slowly pulling the tube back, it dragged a pull string through the cleared gunk. Now I keep a 50 foot roll of that cheap polyethylene tubing in the van just for this. Anyone else have a weird trick for clearing packed conduit?

That plastic tube trick is clever, I'm gonna remember that. @miller.thomas, I was wondering the same thing about it getting stuck. Did you have to use any kind of lube on the tube to help it slide, or was the suction just strong enough to pull it back clean? I've had a steel fish tape bind up and get stuck for good in old packed conduit before.

Nice, that's just like fixing old plumbing.

Did the plastic tube ever get stuck halfway?
