Hot take: Cheap sleeping pads wrecked my back for 2 years
Read a gear review that said R-value under 4 means cold ground saps your warmth no matter the bag. Tested it last weekend at 35 degrees and woke up freezing. Picked up a Therm-a-Rest with R-value 5.7, finally slept through the night. Anybody else ignore R-value for too long?

People forget R-value isn't just about warmth, it's about how your body recovers during sleep. When the ground leeches heat from you all night, your muscles stay tense even if you don't realize it. I had lower back pain for months before I realized my cheap foam pad wasn't insulating properly. Waking up shivering a few times per night stops your body from hitting deep sleep, so you never get that full repair cycle. That constant micro-tensing adds up fast, especially on multi day trips. Glad you found a good pad, R-value 5+ is the sweet spot for anyone over 30 lol.

Emma, how much R-value difference did you notice between your cheap pad and the upgrade once you actually tested it out?

@emma_wells83 never thought about the back pain connection. That muscle tension alone justifies the upgrade.
