My neighbor said his $40 sleeping bag from 2012 is better than my new $300 one

We were packing for a trip to the Adirondacks and he pulled out this old, faded bag, saying it's never let him down in 30 degree weather. It made me wonder if we all just buy gear for the specs and not the real use. How much of your kit is actually proven, not just new and shiny?

Guess he's been sleeping better than your wallet for the last decade.

Totally feel this! My most trusted piece is a rain jacket my dad gave me that's probably older than I am. It just works, and I've never found a reason to replace it even with all the fancy new stuff out there. Sometimes the gear that's been through it all is just the best.

My grandpa's old wool sweater is still my go-to for cold mornings. You're right, the_alice, that kind of gear just has a different feel to it. The new stuff never seems to break in the same way.
