Pro tip: don't trust the 'waterproof' rating on that $120 tent from the big box store unless you enjoy a soggy sleeping bag at 3 AM.

I learned the hard way during a sudden downpour at Lake Tahoe that the factory-sealed seams on my brand-new purchase were basically just for show, so what's a truly reliable tent brand that won't fail in a real storm?

Hilleberg tents are basically bombproof.

Honestly, the real test is how they handle a full season of UV exposure. I had a friend's Hilleberg get super brittle after two summers in the desert sun. The fabric was still in one piece, but you could tear it like paper. Bombproof until the sun cooks it, in my experience.

Sun damage is the silent killer for sure. I had a similar thing happen with a tent left out for a few months, the material just turned to dust. UV protection seems like the real weak spot for a lot of gear.
