Why does nobody talk about the zipper issue on budget tents vs expensive ones

I was stuck choosing between a $60 Coleman tent and a $200 REI one for my trip to the Smokies last month. I went with the cheap one (big mistake) and the zipper jammed on night two, leaving me half asleep in the cold trying to fix it. My buddy had the REI tent and his zipper worked smooth the whole time, no issues at all. Has anyone else dealt with a bad zipper ruining a trip? What do you look for in a tent zipper now?

$60 tent from Coleman. That's your first problem right there. You get what you pay for with zippers, it's literally the cheapest part they can throw in.

Cheap zippers always fail at the worst time...

A buddy of mine bought a cheap Ozark Trail tent for a weekend at Lake Tahoe and the zipper split right down the middle on the first night. He spent the rest of the trip with his sleeping bag zipped up to his chin cause he couldn't get the tent flap closed all the way. Cold and miserable for three days just cause of a stupid zipper. Now he checks every zipper before buying anything.
