I compared old school networking to LinkedIn and guess what won

Back in 2012 I landed a job at a small shop in Portland just by going to a local meetup and talking to people. Last year I spent 3 months sending out 200+ LinkedIn messages got maybe 6 replies and none led to anything. The meetup got me a real connection in one conversation with a guy named Mike who ran a repair business. Has anyone else had way better luck with real life events than online stuff?

Damn, 200 messages for 6 replies? That is insane, I can't believe how bad that ratio is.

Kept my messages short and direct, asked clear questions that were easy to answer. Made a world of difference.

Think people are making this way bigger than it needs to be. 200 messages over 3 months is like 2 a day. That's not exactly grinding hard. Probably was sending the same copy paste thing everyone sends and wondering why nobody cared. Real life works better cause you can read the room and adjust. Online you just blast out words and hope. But if you put in some actual effort on LinkedIn, like commenting on people's posts and building up before asking for something, you'd probably get better results. Not saying online is better than in person. But acting like 6 replies from 200 messages is some huge failure is kinda dramatic. Some people just aren't good at selling themselves.
