I thought biscuit joints were overkill for shop cabinets, the guy at a furniture shop in Columbus proved me wrong
Last month I stopped by a custom furniture shop in Columbus to pick up some walnut offcuts, and the owner showed me a 12 year old shop cabinet with biscuit joints still tight as the day he built it. I had always just screwed and glued my shop cabinets because they never leave the garage, so who cares, right? He let me push on the shelves and there was zero rack or wobble, while my 3 year old cabinet at home has a sagging shelf I keep shimming. I went home and cut biscuits on my next cabinet build, and it took maybe 20 extra minutes total. Any of you use biscuits on shop stuff or is it plywood dados all the way for you?
My first shop cabinet was held together with drywall screws and hope, and I'm pretty sure the shelf bowed just from me looking at it wrong. I went the pocket screw route on the next one like that was gonna fix everything, and nope, still got the sag around year two (my wife calls it my "character" cabinet). Biscuits never even crossed my mind for shop stuff, mostly because I figured glue and screws were good enough for a box that holds paint cans. But hearing a 12 year old cabinet is still dead flat makes me feel like a guy who's been doing it wrong on purpose. Guess I'm digging the biscuit joiner out of the bottom drawer this weekend.
