My friend's 'count the blinks' trick for spotting fake tears
My buddy Dave who edits reality TV told me to watch the eye contour, not the voice, when judging a celeb apology. He said real crying makes the upper eyelid dip for at least 2 seconds, while fake tears have quick, fluttery blinks. I tested it on that TikTok star who apologized for the dog shock collar thing last month, and he was right, she blinked 5 times in 3 seconds and never once lowered her lid. Has anyone else tried reading micro-expressions in these videos, or do you just go on gut feeling?
My buddy Marcus caught his ex doing this exact thing during her Instagram live apology for the group chat leak, and he counted 7 blinks in 4 seconds flat before calling her out in the comments. She never lowered her lid once, and he still brings it up as his proudest detective moment lol.
Take the blink test with a grain of salt. People get nervous on live streams for all sorts of reasons, so count the pauses instead, like when they swallow mid-sentence or look up to the corner. That's way more telling than blinking, and it's harder to fake when they're trying to sell you a story.
