I laughed when a client asked for a book bound with beeswax and string

A lady came into my shop in Asheville last fall with a handwritten journal and asked for a binding using only beeswax and linen thread, no glue. I thought it was just a weird hippie thing that would fall apart. I tried it on a test piece, and after letting it cure for a week, the wax-set spine was surprisingly strong and flexible. Has anyone else had a request that sounded silly but actually worked out?

He asked me what I charged per project now, and I told him about $500. He just nodded and said, "Back in '92, I charged a local print shop $200 for a logo... that was my rent for the month." It made me think about how the whole value of our work has shifted, not just the numbers. Anyone else have an older freelancer in their life who dropped a truth bomb like that?

Dry rubs were my thing, but a wet marinade won me over.

I always used dry rubs on my brisket and ribs. A pal kept saying wet marinades add more moisture. I tested it on a pork butt last month. The meat cooked up softer and held flavor better. The liquid helped the spices sink in deep. Now I start with a marinade and finish with a rub. My BBQ has never been this good before.
