That Shane Dawson apology video from 2020 still haunts me
I was stuck at home during the pandemic, scrolling through YouTube in my tiny apartment, when his 50 minute video popped up. The guy literally sobbed about old racist skits for an hour, but something about the way he kept glancing at the camera felt off... like he was checking if the tears were landing right. I remember counting 4 times he tried to deflect blame onto his past self, like 'that was 2015 me.' Has anyone else noticed how celebrities started using that 'old version of me' excuse way more after that video?

Its just a YouTube video at the end of the day. People act like Shane Dawson invented bad apologies when celebrities have been doing this since the dawn of time. Mel Gibson had a whole career after saying way worse stuff and nobody cried about apology videos back then. The internet just loves to overanalyze every little thing someone does on camera. That "2015 me" thing is pretty old actually, athletes have been saying that about their bad seasons for years. Honestly half the people complaining probably watch those videos for entertainment and then act offended later. Its recycled drama that everybody already forgot about a week later.

Wait didnt that video come out in June 2020? I remember because it was right after the George Floyd protests started. Youre right about the deflection though. He literally said "I was a different person in 2015" but then kept crying about how much he regretted it. The worst part was when he brought up his childhood trauma as a reason for making blackface videos. Like okay, having a hard childhood doesnt make you put on dark makeup and do accents. That whole video set the standard for every celebrity apology since then.

My cousin Jimmy actually tried that same move in a totally different situation. He got caught stealing from his job at the hardware store and went on this whole rant about how his dad never taught him right from wrong. Like dude, you're 34 years old, you've had like 20 years to figure that out on your own. The manager just stared at him with this blank face. Anyway, that video you're talking about was definitely June 2020 because I had just started working from home and I remember watching it during my lunch break. He really set the bar low for apology videos though. Now every time someone messes up they just cry on camera and blame their childhood.
