Overheard a line cook say 'the recipe is just a suggestion' and it got me heated

I was at a pop-up in Seattle last night and heard a guy on the fry station tell a new hire that exact phrase. He was bragging about eyeballing the seasoning for the house rub. That's a 12-hour smoked brisket, not your Tuesday night pasta. I've spent 3 months dialing in those exact ratios. It's not a suggestion, it's the blueprint. When you wing it, the whole kitchen pays the price with inconsistent plates. Has anyone else had to deal with this kind of attitude from their crew?

Like @angela_patel75 said, I just made them taste the difference.

Oh, "the recipe is just a suggestion," that's a classic. Next he'll say the fire alarm is just a dinner bell and health codes are just loose guidelines. Sure, go ahead and wing the 12-hour brisket, what could possibly go wrong? I guess some people like their job security to be just a suggestion too.

Agree with @angela_patel75. That attitude burns the whole house down.
