inA string of bad luck with a new horse owner last month
Totally get how that works, seth364 is right about the focus shift. Reminds me of when my cousin brings her hyper kid to family stuff. Someone just hands him a bag of chips to open for everyone, and it's like magic, he's busy and the whole room chills out. It's the same idea, give the worried person a small job that helps. Finding the right way to ask is the real skill though, so they feel useful and not bossed around.

inSaw a public library in Denver still using Windows 7 on their help desk PCs
I used to worry about that too, but @jake_patel is right, it's way more common than people realize.

inMy helper put down a whole box of plank flooring backwards on a job in Boise.
Ever try marking the starting wall with a big piece of blue tape and an arrow? Drill it into them that the arrows ALWAYS point away from that wall. Makes it a rule, not just a detail to look for.

inWhy cosmetology programs are failing new stylists from day one
Seriously though I used to roll my eyes at reviews like that, like who leaves one star for toast? But after seeing how much a couple bad ones tanked my friend's cafe, it completely flipped my view. That stuff HURTS when it's your livelihood, and people just throw stars around without thinking. Now I see even a silly complaint can stack up and do real damage. Makes you really feel for anyone dealing with it.
