My landlord tried to keep my full deposit for a scratch on the floor

I moved out of my Logan Square apartment last month. The landlord sent a letter saying he was keeping all $1200 of my deposit because of a deep scratch in the hardwood. I took pictures before I left, and the scratch was there when I moved in. I sent him a copy of my move-in checklist with that exact damage noted, plus the new photos. He wrote back three days later and said he would return the money. Has anyone else had to fight for a deposit in Chicago? What's the best way to keep records?

Was reading an old service manual and the torque spec for a 6.0 Powerstroke head bolt was way lower than I expected

I was flipping through a 2005 Ford binder in the shop and saw the final torque for the M11 bolts listed at 120 ft-lbs, not the 140 I've always done. Found it on page 04-10 under 'cylinder head removal and installation'. Did they revise that spec later on, or was I just taught wrong from the start?

I actually found a $3 dress from Shein that lasted 2 years

Everyone says fast fashion falls apart instantly, but I wore this specific black slip dress to 4 weddings and washed it cold. It only got a tiny hole after 60+ wears. Am I just the luckiest person ever or are some pieces weirdly durable?

I thought getting my own bank account after the split would be a one afternoon thing

Man, I was so wrong. After the papers were signed, I figured I'd just walk into my local credit union, show my ID, and be done in an hour. Nope. Turns out my ex was still listed as the primary on our old joint account, and the bank had this whole process for removing someone that needed both signatures or a court order. I had to get a copy of the final decree, then wait for them to 'verify' it, which took like 3 business days. Then there was the whole new account setup. What I thought would take maybe 2 hours max ended up stretching over a full week of back and forth calls and visits. It was a huge hassle when I just wanted to feel financially separate. Anyone else hit a weird snag like that with the boring admin stuff after everything was supposed to be done?

I was stripping a 1920s window in Cincinnati last month and realized I've been using a heat gun way too close for years, which was baking the wood underneath. The old foreman on the job pointed out the scorch marks I'd made and just said 'slow down, kid'. What's your go-to method for getting that rock-hard glazing out without damaging the frame?

I tried designing a dress with only digital mockups versus making a real toile first

I mean, everyone online talks about how you can just do everything on a screen now, right? So for a project last spring, I sketched a wrap dress in Procreate, made a 3D model in CLO, and thought I was done. It looked perfect. Then I actually cut the fabric, this nice linen blend, and put it on my dress form. The wrap section gaped weirdly when you moved, and the waist sat about an inch too low. I had to redo the whole bodice pattern. Making a quick muslin toile first, even a rough one from cheap cotton, would have shown me those fit issues in like 20 minutes. The digital stuff is great for color and general shape, but it just can't tell you how fabric really hangs on a body. Has anyone else found that skipping the physical mockup stage just creates more work later?

Just finished a 1000 yard pour and the slump test came back at exactly 3 inches

We were doing a warehouse slab in Dallas and the truck showed up looking a bit wet. I figured we were in for a fight with the bull float, but the test was spot on. That perfect slump meant we could get it down and troweled without any extra water or waiting around. It's the first time I've hit that number dead on in maybe five years of running jobs. Has anyone else had a mix come in exactly right when you were sure it wouldn't?

Vent: A job on the Mississippi near St. Louis completely changed how I check my cutterhead

Honestly, we were pulling up a lot of weird, twisted metal and old cable that had been down there for years. My foreman, a guy named Carl, told me to stop the pump and just look at the teeth for five minutes after every two hours of runtime. Ngl, I thought it was a waste of time. But after we found a piece of rebar that had cracked three teeth and nearly wrecked the drive shaft, I do it every single shift now. Anyone else have a specific schedule for cutter checks on tough material?
