Just figured out a dumb trick for cleaning sooty brick without damaging it
I was scrubbing a chimney in an old house near Richmond last Tuesday and the mortar kept crumbling every time I tried to brush the black off. Out of frustration I grabbed a dry sponge instead of a wet one and it lifted the soot without wrecking the brick at all. Has anyone else accidentally stumbled onto a simpler method that saved their bacon?

Wait, did you try the dry sponge before or after the brick was already wet from scrubbing?

Blew through a whole bag of storebought brick cleaner once before realizing all I needed was a dry brush and some patience. Tbh that dry sponge trick sounds way smarter than my approach which was basically "scrub harder and hope for the best." Now I just stare at my messy bricks and pretend the soot adds character.
