The day I realized I was overcleaning every flue I touched

For 8 years I scrubbed every flue down to bare brick like my mentor taught me. Then a homeowner pulled up a photo from 3 years later showing cracks forming in the mortar where I'd been too aggressive. Anybody else have to unlearn an old habit that was actually doing damage?

Took a step back and started really watching how things held up over time. A light touch actually left everything looking better and lasted way longer than scrubbing the heck out of it. Now I go gentle and only clean what's actually dirty.

Feels like some people just need a project whether it needs doing or not. Probably looked great though when he was done.
