Went to a client's house in Portland and found 3 inches of creosote buildup

Shelley said she had her chimney cleaned last year, but when I pulled the damper I saw a solid layer of crusty black glaze. I had to run the rotary kit with the chain knocker for 45 minutes just to break through. Has anyone else dealt with homeowners who swear their last sweep did a full job but clearly didn't?

Shelley might've gotten a "cleaning" that was just the smoke shelf and not the actual flue.

That's exactly the kind of half-assed job people pull these days. You pay for a full cleaning and they just hit the easy spots and call it done. Seen it with car mechanics too, they'll change your air filter but skip checking the belts. Or painters only doing one coat when you paid for two. People just rush through stuff and hope you don't notice. It's like nobody takes pride in their work anymore.

Honestly though, is it always that serious? Sometimes people just have off days (like we all do) and maybe the cleaning wasn't perfect but it's not like they stole from you or ruined anything. I feel like @kimw57 is making a mountain out of a molehill here. And with car mechanics, you've got to remember they're not psychic - if they skip checking a belt, it could just be a misunderstanding about what you actually wanted them to look at. I'd rather keep calm and just ask for a redo than assume everyone's out to cut corners, you know?
