Vent: People keep acting like solar panels are a magic fix for everything

I’m in Phoenix and I keep hearing people say solar panels will completely erase your electric bill. That’s just not true if your roof faces the wrong way or you’ve got shade from those old mesquite trees. I installed a 6kW system last summer and my bill only dropped by 40 percent because my south side is partially blocked. Has anyone else dealt with neighbors pushing solar without understanding the real numbers?

My friend in Flagstaff has a south-facing roof with zero shade and his bill went down 70 percent. Meanwhile my cousin in Mesa has panels angled all wrong and she saves maybe $20 a month. It feels like people see a solar commercial and think it's a universal cheat code, but reality has a whole lot of variables. Same thing happens with those smart thermostats that claim to slash your bill just by learning your schedule. My neighbor's costs actually went up because the thing kept cranking the AC when nobody was home.

Oh come on, that's like buying a winter coat and blaming it for not keeping you cool in summer. If people actually did the math on their roof angle and sun exposure before buying, solar would save almost EVERYONE money.

Right?! It's wild how people just assume solar is gonna be this magical money-saver no matter what. I swear half the time it's just bad planning and then they blame the tech instead of their own research lol.
