Blew a spindle bearing on a Friday at 4 PM

I was running a production part in 6061 aluminum and heard this weird grinding noise from the head. Checked the RPM and it was fine, but the vibration was getting worse fast. Shut it down and pulled the belt cover, found the top bearing was basically shattered and spitting out grease. Had to call the boss and tell him we were down until Monday for a rebuild. Has anyone else had a Haas spindle let go with no warning like that?

Yeah the "Friday curse" thing is pretty spot on actually. It's funny how machines seem to know when you're trying to get shit done before a weekend. I've noticed this pattern with pretty much anything mechanical or electronic - cars, computers, even my stupid coffee maker acts up right when I'm in a rush. It's like the universe has some built in rule that things break at the worst possible moment, not when you've got time to deal with it.

Blame it on the Friday curse, that's the only warning these things ever give.
