Found a crazy stat about tool wear in the new Haas manual
I was reading the Haas CNC manual for our new VF-2 and saw a line that said a 1/2 inch end mill can lose up to 0.001 inches of diameter in just 20 minutes of cutting 4140 steel. I always thought tool wear was slower. It made me check our feeds and speeds again. Do you guys think the manual is being overly cautious, or should we trust those numbers?

That "lose up to 0.001 inches" line would make me double-check my math too. I've seen manuals give worst-case numbers to cover themselves, but 4140 is no joke. It really comes down to your exact setup, coolant, and how aggressive you're running. I'd trust the manual as a solid warning, then dial it back a bit from there and see what your actual tool life looks like. Better to be a little cautious than to be the guy explaining a wrecked end mill and a scrapped part.

That's a good point about trusting the manual first.

Manuals always give the worst case. It's like the mileage estimate on a car sticker. You never actually get that number in real life. Start with their numbers and adjust from there.
