My kid asked me why the machine sounds like it's singing

I was running a job on our old Haas VF2 at the shop, and my 8-year-old came by after school. He stood there for a minute and said, 'Dad, why does it sound like it's singing a sad robot song?' I told him it was just the spindle and coolant pump, but now I can't unhear it... every time I run a long cycle, I think about a lonely robot ballad. Has a weird comment from a non-machinist ever stuck with you like that?

Wait, hold on. @davidw10 said the spindle is the sad one? That's wild to me. Honestly the spindle just sounds like a fan or something, it's just noise. The real singing is totally from the servos moving around. I swear sometimes on a long curve it sounds like a tiny robot humming to itself. Your kid is a genius for catching that, I just tune it out now.

Ever wonder if the robot is sad because it knows it's just cutting the same part for the thousandth time? My neighbor's kid once said our printer sounded like it was whispering secrets. Now I just hear a tiny, gossipy machine every time it prints a shipping label. Kids point out the weird art in the boring stuff we tune out.

Actually, that's the servos, not the spindle. The spindle just makes a steady whine. The singing comes from the servos moving the axes, especially during a contouring move. They hum at different pitches depending on the feed rate. Your kid nailed it, it's totally a sad robot song. I've had mine sound like a tiny opera singer doing scales.

Nah, I gotta disagree. That steady spindle whine is way more of a sad song than the servos. The servos are just doing their job, but the spindle's constant high pitch is like it's just stuck there, you know? It's the background noise of pure boredom. The servos changing pitch at least sound alive, like they're trying to talk. The spindle is just a prisoner. Maybe it's just me but that unchanging sound is way more depressing.
