Debate: should beginners learn Python first or jump straight into JavaScript for web stuff?

I went to a coding meetup at the downtown library last night and half the room swore by Python for starting out while the other half said JavaScript is the only way to go now, which path do you think makes more sense for someone who's never written a line of code?

My buddy Tim at the office tried learning Python first and got bored after a month because he couldn't SEE anything happening. He switched to JavaScript and built a little number guessing game in his browser in one weekend, that got him hooked. So I'd say JavaScript for web stuff, you get instant feedback and that keeps beginners going.

Nah but Python's instant for data stuff and way less frustrating syntax wise.
