Chemex vs French press for camping, I went with the press and it was a mess
Last month I took my usual setup out to Big Bend for a weekend trip. I always bring my hand grinder and a bag of beans but I had to pick between my glass Chemex or my old French press. The Chemex is fragile and needs paper filters, the press is basically indestructible. I picked the press because it takes up less space in the cooler. Big mistake. The first morning I ground too fine and it took 12 minutes to plunge because the mesh got clogged. Then the camp stove boiled the water too hot and the coffee came out bitter and muddy. I ended up drinking instant coffee from the gas station in Terlingua that afternoon. Has anyone figured out a reliable way to brew good coffee while camping without bringing a whole electric kettle and scale?
Man, what grind size were you actually using? I have made that mistake before and it is the worst, but 12 minutes on a press sounds like the beans were basically dust. Did you adjust at all after the first day or just suffer through it the whole trip?
