My neighbor in Boise told me my pour over ritual was just showing off, and I think he had a point
He watched me weigh beans to 0.1 grams and time the bloom for 45 seconds, then asked why I never just taste it and adjust. I tried his way for a week with the same beans and honestly the cups were close enough that I stopped dragging out the scale every morning. Does anyone else here think the ritual is half the hobby, or am I just stubborn about my setup?
The part where you say the cups were "close enough" is exactly why I think you gave up too easy. Close enough is not the same as dialed in, and those tiny changes in grind and ratio are what turn a decent cup into one you actually remember. Your neighbor basically won because he got in your head about looking silly, not because his way makes better coffee. The scale and the timer are not showing off, they are how you repeat a good cup instead of getting lucky once in a while. A week with the same beans proves nothing either since you never changed anything to see what the setup can actually do. Ritual being half the hobby is real too, and if you enjoy the process then who cares what the guy next door thinks about it.
