I used to hate going to comic shops, but a trip to a place in Portland changed my mind

I was in Portland last month and my friend made me go to this comic shop called Cosmic Monkey. I always thought they were just messy stores run by rude guys who judge you, you know? But this place was different. The guy at the counter saw me looking lost and just asked what movies I liked, then pointed me to a shelf with books that had a similar vibe. He didn't make me feel dumb for not knowing anything. I ended up buying a graphic novel called 'The Nice House on the Lake' because of his tip, and I read the whole thing that night. It was so good, and now I get why people like finding stuff in person instead of just online. The whole vibe was just friendly and helpful, not gatekeepy at all. Has anyone else had a shop totally change their view on the whole comic scene?

My local shop had a guy who remembered my name after one visit, which was wild because I have the memory of a goldfish.

Wait, after just one visit? That's some next-level memory... I'd be suspicious he looked at my card or something.

Read an article once about how some people are just wired to remember names like that, it's a real skill. Makes you feel seen in a way that's getting rare these days. My barber does the same thing, and it honestly keeps me going back more than the haircut itself. That kind of small personal touch can really make a place feel like home.
