Warning: I switched sides on comic elitism last week

I once backed hardcore fans who mocked casual readers. Seeing a kid get shut down at my shop changed my mind for good. Have you ever had a flip like that on fan culture?

My buddy saw a long-time collector get asked a simple Superman question and just freeze up. It reminded me of what @blairm93 said, that the loudest experts are sometimes the most unsure. My friend said watching that guy stumble changed how he sees the whole "real fan" thing.

Realized sometimes the biggest nerds are just scared they don't know everything. Saw a guy once shame someone for not knowing a minor X-Men villain, then later that guy admitted he was lost on a current story arc. That gatekeeping often comes from a place of insecurity, not real expertise. Flipping your view means you're growing up and putting the hobby before your own ego.

It's hilarious when a comic book expert blanks on a basic question. They build their whole personality around tiny details, then fold under light pressure. That gatekeeping noise is just a cover for being scared of looking dumb. Watching them fumble is like seeing a boss monster defeated by a simple puzzle. Real growth is dropping the act and just enjoying the stories together. Maybe we should all chill and admit that comics are for fun, not for proving who's the smartest.

That guy who shamed someone over a minor X-Men villain probably has a spreadsheet tracking every appearance of Mojo. Then he gets asked what's happening in the main X-Men book right now and his brain just bluescreens. It's like watching someone who memorized the baseball rulebook but can't tell you who's pitching tonight. The whole act falls apart when the questions get easy.
