Had a weird one with a laptop that wouldn't boot after a RAM upgrade
Customer brought in a Dell Latitude from 2020 that just beeped after they installed new memory. Tried reseating it three times, no luck. Finally ran a memtest on the old stick in each slot and found the second DIMM slot was dead. Anyone else run into a bad slot that only shows up with certain RAM?

Yeah that's a classic. Seen it a few times on older Dells and HPs. The slot works fine with the original stick but fails with higher density modules. It's like the slot's controller can't handle the new timings.

Can't handle the new timings" makes sense now, I always blamed bad ram.

Honestly that's wild, I never even thought about the slot itself being the problem. So you're telling me the motherboard just gives up trying to talk to the new ram? Baker.christopher has a point, it really does sound like the controller just taps out. Tbh that explains so many weird crashes I've had over the years where the ram tested fine. Makes you want to just chuck the whole old machine sometimes.
