My wife asked me why we don't just pour everything on a Friday and let it cure over the weekend.

She's not in the trade, just saw my schedule. I gave my usual spiel about temperature swings and moisture loss. Then she said, 'So it's not about the days, it's about controlling the environment. You're a babysitter for mud.' Hit different. Made me realize we talk about 'curing time' like it's a set number, but we're really managing a process. Anyone else have a non-trade person reframe something basic for you?

Oh man, that's perfect! My buddy's a mechanic and he calls my final sanding "detailing a wall," which really is the same idea. It's all just watching a material change state, like @avery_flores said about the cake thing. We're all just patient observers with different kinds of dust on our clothes.

My uncle is a baker and he once called my drywall finishing "baking a giant, flat, terrible cake." He said we both just watch the clock and poke at it until it's done. Changed how I see the morning check on a big patch job.

Love that, but your uncle's wrong about the poking part. Gotta just look at it, @avery_flores, touching it before it's ready is how you get a real mess.
