Old timer told me to wet the forms before pouring and I ignored him for years

A retired finisher named Pete at the supply yard kept saying it prevents the wood from sucking moisture out of the mix. Tried it on a patio job last month in Phoenix and had way less cracking around the edges. Anyone else do this or am I overthinking it?

Pete sounds like he knew his stuff, I always listen to the old guys at the yard.
