I was at a wedding in Asheville and saw something that changed how I do updos

The bride's hair was this gorgeous, soft braided crown, but by the end of the ceremony, it was already sagging. I asked her stylist about it later, and she admitted she only used about 15 bobby pins total for the whole style. I realized I was being way too light-handed, trying to keep things looking 'natural'. Now, for a similar updo, I use at least 40 pins, crisscrossing them for real hold, and I tell the client it'll feel secure all night. It's a small change, but my formal styles last so much longer. How many pins do you all typically use for a big event updo?

Fifteen pins? For a whole wedding? That stylist was playing with fire. I've seen updos held together with more hope than pins, and they always end up looking like a bird's nest by the cake cutting. My cousin's hair fell out of a messy bun at her own reception because her person was scared of using too many. You're right to load up on them, just hide them well. It's the difference between a style and a suggestion.

Bird's nest by the cake cutting" is too real lol, but honestly the right texture spray is more important than pin count.

My stylist in Chicago uses a trick with clear elastic thread before pinning. It creates a hidden anchor point so the pins have something solid to grip, not just hair on hair. That internal structure is what actually keeps everything locked in place for hours.
