That time a client's mom told me my toner was off by half a shade
She was a retired cosmetologist from the 80s, and I thought she was just being picky about my work on her daughter's balayage. Turns out my color stock had oxidized a bit over 3 months and she caught it right away. Has anyone else had a client's relative save them from ruining a formula without being rude about it?

Whoa, I actually see it a little different. The toner being off by half a shade is one thing, but the real issue is your color stock oxidizing over three months. That means you weren't rotating your inventory or checking dates, which is kind of a basic mistake. The retired cosmetologist just had sharper eyes than most, but you should have caught that yourself before it got to the client's head.

Three months is way too long for color stock to sit. I started labeling every bottle with the delivery date after that exact thing happened to me back in 2018. The damaged batch was from July, I was still grabbing it in October. Now I do a quick check every Monday morning. Pull the oldest stuff to the front, toss anything past 90 days. Saves a lot of headaches and keeps clients from walking out with muddy tones.

Right on @williamhenderson, had that same wakeup call myself when an old client's mom spotted my expired developer.
