Pro tip: never trust a brand new sling on a hot day

Had a brand new nylon sling snap on me last Thursday lifting a 4-ton HVAC unit at a job site in Phoenix. The manufacturer's tag said 5-ton capacity but the heat had it sweating oil and it gave way at the splice. Anyone else ever had a brand new piece of gear fail on first use?

Phoenix heat makes EVERYTHING untrustworthy, not just gear.

And yeah that synthetic gear stuff is no joke lol. I had a pair of climbing slings that literally turned to dust in my hands after sitting in my trunk for one summer. The UV down here just eats through nylon like it's nothing. Even my rubber floor mats in the truck started getting sticky and falling apart after a couple years. So now I just assume everything has an expiration date about half of what the label says. Better to replace stuff early than have it fail at the worst possible time.

Turned to dust in your hands" - that's terrifying, dude.

Buddy of mine watched a brand new strap separate lifting a generator. Heat does crazy stuff to synthetic gear.
