Marketing guy told me our pest control ads were using the wrong numbers for 6 months

He showed me that our cost-per-lead calculator was pulling from total calls instead of booked appointments, which made everything look half as expensive as it really was... anyone else find a hidden metric that totally changed how you read your reports?

Oof, that's a rough one. Finding out your numbers have been wrong for six months, that stings. Makes you wonder what other reports are lying to you. Found something similar in my own tracking once. Realized our "returning customer" metric counted any repeat purchase, even if they only bought a cheap add-on once. Made it look like we had way more loyalty than we really did. Totally changed how I looked at everything after that.

Wait, how did you even catch that? Was it just a gut feeling that the numbers seemed off, or did someone tip you off to look at the formula? I ask because I feel like most people would just trust the dashboard and move on, but it sounds like you actually dug into the logic. That kind of deep dive is rare, but it's the only way to find bugs like that.
