That viral grocery receipt showing "inflation" was actually from 2019

My mom sent me a Facebook post with a receipt claiming eggs cost $8.49 last week, but the store code at the top wasn't even valid anymore. I looked it up and that same receipt was circulating since 2020. How many people are sharing fake data without checking the date on a receipt?

And @lucast81 nailed it with that image search trick, that's exactly what more people need to do before reposting. Half the outrage online is just recycled photos from years ago with a new caption slapped on. I've seen that same receipt pop up in three different Facebook groups my aunt is in, each time with a different sob story about how "this is what we're dealing with now." Showed my cousin how to check the metadata on her phone and she found out the "this week's gas prices" meme her friend posted was actually from 2017. The date checking thing needs to be basic common sense at this point, not some secret hacker skill.

Pinned the original post to my phone and checked the store number myself. Took two seconds to see it was a dead code. Then I showed my mom how to right click and search an image to find the original date. She stopped sharing that stuff pretty quick once she saw the real timeline.
