Tracked my grocery bill for 8 weeks and the store brand swap saved $47 a month
My wife and I started writing down every receipt back in April because we felt like we were bleeding money at Kroger. We swapped 11 items to store brand over 2 months (cereal, butter, frozen veggies) and the monthly total dropped from $612 to $565 while nobody at dinner noticed a thing. Has anyone else done a real before and after on this, or does the savings vanish once you factor in the stuff you end up tossing?
Tbh $47 a month is real money but I wonder how much of that gap was just the store brand being lighter or smaller. Like a box of cereal that's 12 oz vs 16 oz can look like a win on the receipt but you're just buying less food. The toss factor matters too, if the generic frozen veggies taste like cardboard and half end up in the trash then you didn't save anything. I'd want to see this tracked for like 6 months before I believe it sticks. Not saying he's wrong, just that 8 weeks is a pretty short window to call it a real pattern.
