TIL that 'organic' labels on eggs at my local Kroger don't actually mean the chickens go outside, after a farmer in Ohio told me the loophole.

I was all in on paying $6 a dozen until he explained that 'free range' just means a tiny door exists even if the chickens never see daylight, so now what labels actually guarantee outdoor access?

@nina_hall48 is close but even "pasture raised" can be a loose claim with little oversight.

I read somewhere that "pasture raised" is the only label that actually means something.

Oh man, labels on eggs are like the wild west. I once bought "pasture raised" eggs from a brand with a picture of a happy chicken on the front, and I swear the yolks were the same pale yellow as the cheap ones.
