My cousin sent me a video of my own voice saying I'd pay for his new phone

I was having a normal Tuesday until my cousin called, super excited about the phone I 'promised' to buy him, and he played back a clip of my voice saying exactly that. I spent the next two hours walking him through the weird mouth blurring in the clip and how the background sound didn't match my kitchen. Ever had someone try to use a deep fake on you personally?

Yeah, my brother tried that with a fake audio clip of me agreeing to loan him money. I made him send me the raw file and pointed out the weird digital glitches in the audio wave when he said the dollar amount. Showed him a real recording of my voice for comparison and the difference was obvious. He finally admitted he used some free app he found online.

My old roommate used a voice deepfake to try and get my Netflix password. The giveaway was the cadence, it sounded like me but with the weird, flat rhythm of a text-to-speech bot. I had him replay it and counted three identical pauses between words that never happen in real speech.

Disagree on the cadence thing. My cousin got me with a deepfake last year asking for my Hulu login. The voice had my exact speaking rhythm and pauses, it was scary good. The only slip was a tiny metallic ring on hard "k" sounds, like in "account". That's what tipped me off.
