My uncle's 20-year-old swamp cooler advice actually worked on our stucco fix

He swore by mixing a little Elmer's glue into the stucco patch for cracks near our patio in Phoenix and after three monsoons it's still holding, but now I'm wondering if that's just trapping moisture behind the paint, has anyone else tried this weird trick?

Oh wow, that's genius and I'm honestly kicking myself for not thinking of it sooner! I did the same thing last year on the cracks around our garage door in Tucson. I used the regular white glue, not even the wood kind, and it's held up through two crazy summers of heat and one nasty haboob. I was worried about the moisture thing too, but my neighbor who's been doing stucco work for thirty years said the glue actually seals the patch better than just the mix alone. He told me it makes the patch flex a little instead of cracking again, so it doesn't trap water, it just moves with the house. I've checked behind the paint after some heavy rain and it's bone dry, so I think you're good to keep going with it.
