PSA: Skip the fancy insulation, try this desert hack instead
Everyone says use spray foam for desert homes but I wrapped my south wall in 2-inch foil-backed bubble wrap three summers ago and my AC runs half as much. The reflectivity beats R-value in dry heat. Anyone else experiment with radiant barriers over traditional stuff?

Honestly, "my AC runs half as much"? That's wild. I gotta ask, are you talking about the kind of bubble wrap they use for moving or the stuff from the hardware store? Because that's a massive difference in electricity bills. Tbh I always thought foil bubble wrap was just for water heaters and stuff, not whole walls. Ngl I'm half tempted to try it on my own south facing wall but I'm scared my HOA would throw a fit over the shiny look.

That's the thing, right? We all get so used to doing things one way that we forget there's a whole other approach sitting right in front of us. It's like how people will spend a fortune on blackout curtains but never think about plain old reflective film on the window. You see this everywhere. Someone will buy a whole new expensive fridge because the old one is a little warm, but they never even checked if the door seal was just dirty. People don't look at the simple cheap fixes first. So the bubble wrap on the wall sounds crazy, but maybe it's just one of those obvious things nobody tries because it feels too dumb to work.

Wait, so are you actually saying you've never seen the foil bubble wrap used on walls before? I've got a buddy who lined his whole garage door with that stuff and said it dropped his workshop temp by like 15 degrees. Kind of makes you wonder why we don't just slap it on every hot wall and call it a day. But your HOA point is fair, those folks will lose their minds over anything that doesn't match the neighbors' beige siding. What if you painted the foil side with something matte before installing it? Would that kill the reflection or just hide the shiny?

Yeah, the "bubble wrap for moving" vs "hardware store bubble wrap" thing is a real question. I think it's the foil kind they sell in rolls near the insulation, not the packing kind. But honestly, the whole thing @emma_garcia said about people skipping the simple cheap fixes is spot on. It's like we're trained to look for big fancy solutions when the dumb little hack is right there. I've seen people spend hundreds on special paint for heat reflection, but bubble wrap costs like ten bucks and does the same job. The HOA worry is real though. Maybe you could try it on a wall that faces an alley or something where nobody sees it, just to test if it actually works before committing.
