That old timer in Flagstaff who made me watch him read a parts manual

I was 19, fresh out of diesel school, working at a shop off Route 66. This retired guy, must've been 70, came in with a Cummins 5.9 that had a weird miss. I started pulling injectors right away, but he just sat on a stool flipping through the factory manual for like 20 minutes. He pointed at a torque spec and said, 'The book tells you how, but it doesn't tell you why.' He made me re-check the valve lash first, and sure enough, that was the issue. Now I always read the theory section before I touch a wrench, and I catch more problems before they cost parts. Anybody else ever get schooled by a grumpy old-timer who turned out to be right?

Ha, that story hits me right in the gut. The part that gets me is the old timer could have just told you the answer in five minutes, but he made you sit through the whole manual. That wasn't about being grumpy, it was about teaching you to slow down and respect the system. Most people want to skip to the fix and miss the whole point that the book is a map, not just a list of steps. I bet that lesson saved you way more than one set of injectors over the years.
