Appreciation post: I finally get the appeal of speedpaint videos

Last week in a Chicago coffee shop, I saw an artist's 3-minute timelapse of a fantasy portrait and realized it's not about the final piece, it's about seeing the messy, human process. Anyone have a favorite artist who does these really well?

Used to think they were just for showing off a finished piece fast. Saw one last month of someone painting a forest and they completely redid the sky halfway through. That was it for me. Watching them fix a mistake makes the whole thing feel real, not like some magic trick. Now I look for the ones where you can see them change their mind.

Mistakes make it a story, not just a picture.

Oh totally. My friend was trying to paint her dog from a photo and the first try looked like a weird potato. She was so mad, almost threw the whole canvas out. But she let it dry, came back and just painted right over the top of it. You can still see a little of the old shape under the new paint, and it actually gives the fur this cool texture. The final piece has this energy the first try never could have. That mistake is the whole reason it's good.
